Burlap bodice with cowry shell detial.
Lately I have been researching more eco friendly materials and elevating their importance by incorporating them into high fashion designs. One of the most simple, oldest, inexpensive and eco friendly textiles that comes to my mind is Burlap. It is beige in color and has a large weave pattern, allowing burlap to have the ability to "breathe." Burlap is very strong and does not tear easily. It can withstand being exposed to water repeatedly and can be produced in many sizes and and widths according to need.
On Saturday, March 10th The Fashion Honors Group at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale hosted a fashion show at Arts Park in Hollywood, Florida. This event was in collaboration with several of The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale departments such as culinary, graphic design, animation, and video production.
This fashion show was to create awareness for The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, and is most often associated with autism. We showcased purple themed garments by students and alumni of Ai. The Fashion Honors Group raised about $2,500 towards the cause. I created two original dresses for the Fashion show. Pictured left a strapless sequin bustier dress with back ruffle detail. Below my heart pencil dress in Purple.
Dress designed by Carrie Cochran Cabrera in honor of World Aids Day
World Aids Day is observed worldwide on Dec. 1st every year. The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. The red ribbon was the first ever ribbon symbol, inspiring later versions such as the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness.
I designed this dress as a part of an exhibition supporting a local non for profit aids organization. In the theme of Red Ribbon I crafted this retro inspired mod shift dress using over 75 yards of grosgrain and satin ribbon, topped off with red ostrich feathers. The 2008 exhibition included fashions, shoes, and artwork from local designers on display in the Galleria Mall.
